All versions of this tour begin with three days birding based from Alice Springs, the capital of the outback and one of the best birding destinations in Australia. Species targeted in this part of the tour include Rufous-crowned Emuwren, Dusky Grasswren, Grey Honeyeater, Painted Finch, Spinifexbird, Redthroat, Black-breasted Buzzard, Banded Whiteface, Little Buttonquail, Slaty-backed Thornbill, Red-browed Pardalote and Bourkes Parrot.
Depending on the option chosen, on the 4th day of the tour we relocate to either Coober Pedy (Painted Desert), Yulara (Great Victoria Desert) or Simpson Desert for two nights.
Painted Desert version:
On the Painted Desert Gibberplains version based from Coober Pedy we visit my reliable sites for Chestnut-breasted Whiteface, Gibberbird, Thick-billed Grasswren (indulkana subspecies), Rufous Fieldwren (isabellanus subspecies). Along the way we will search for Cinnamon Quail-Thrush, Chiming and Chirruping Wedgebill, Bluebonnet (haematogaster subspecies) Inland Dotterel and Major Mitchell Cockatoo.
Great Victoria Desert: Sandhill Grasswren version:
The Great Victoria Desert: Sandhill Grasswren version based from Yulara our focus is the Sandhill Grasswren for which I have multiple accessible (non-National Park!) locations. Along the way we can expect to find Cinnamon Quail-Thrush, Chiming Wedgebill, Inland Dotterel and Major Mitchell Cockatoo. In good seasons both Scarlet-chested Parrot and Princess Parrot are possible in this area (we encountered Scarlet-chested Parrot on this tour in April 2017 and Princess Parrot have been sighted in the area multiple times through 2017).
Simpson Desert version:
If you want to see Eyrean Grasswrens and Letterwinged Kites then this is the tour for you! Other birds seen on this tour include Gibberbird, Banded Whiteface, Cinnamon Quail-Thrush, Chiming Wedgebill, Inland Dotterel and Major Mitchell Cockatoo. This is a great tour to spotlight for small mammals too: the rare Plains Mouse is resident, as are Dasyurids like Kultarr and Mulgara. Note: There is no accomodation in this region so we must camp. All necessary equipment provided.
On all versions this tour we stay at high standard accomodation (but Simpson Desert version requires bush camping after the Alice Springs section- there is no accomodation out there!). Venues include the Hilton Doubletree (Alice Springs), Desert Gardens (Yulara) and Lookout Cave Underground Hotel (Coober Pedy). All food during the tour is included in the price.
